Jail Diversion 

Jail Diversion is a program designed to help individuals in Marshall County prevent incarceration and provide services so that they live to their full potential

Assistance Offered

  • Connect individuals with outpatient mental health services
  • Connect individuals with inpatient/outpatient substance abuse services
  • Referral to housing assistance
  • Health insurance assistance
  • Referrals for medication assistance
  • Referrals to food/clothing assistance in the community
  • Referral to employment opportunities
  • Provide short-term intensive case monitoring

Why Jail Diversion?

  • 7-10% of all police calls involve an individual with a mental health disorder
  • 15-31% of individuals in U.S. jails and prisons have mental illness
  • Individuals who cycle through mental health, substance abuse, and criminal justice systems often receive fragmented treatment and are at risk of being arrested again, often for non-violent offenses
  • The primary goal will be to reduce or eliminate charges by promoting individuals to address their mental health and/or substance abuse
  • Jail Diversion aims to enhance public safety while improving access to care for those who need it

​Goals 

  • Decrease recidivism
  • Reduce jail overcrowding
  • Reduce costs of treatment during incarceration
  • Decrease unnecessary prosecution
  • Provide individuals with the tools they need to reach their full potential

Eligibility Requirements 

  • 18 years old or older
  • Voluntary agreement to participate in the program
  • Mental health disorder, co-occurring disorder and/or brain injury
  • Resident of Marshall County
