Nakomis received her Bachelors of Science degree in Business and Human Services from Elizabethtown College, and received a Masters degree in Social Work with a concentration in mental health therapy and violence and injury prevention from Washington University in St. Louis. She is a Kathryn M. Buder Scholar from the Kathryn M. Buder Center of American Indian Studies, at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. She became a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Pennsylvania in 2017, and licensed in the state of Iowa in 2018.
Nakomis had the privilege of being a military spouse for over 21 years, which provided opportunity to work with many individuals from various cultures and backgrounds. She began her Human Services and Social work career providing cultural bridges to the AI/AN population in a large university hospital setting. She has extensive practice, experience and expertise working in underprivileged communities and providing services for children and families in the area of child welfare, child/parent advocacy, NICWA, and providing service as a CASA -Court Appointed Special Advocate in a large metropolitan area.
Her clinical interests in areas of violence and injury prevention, child, adolescent and family mental health, trauma response, crisis intervention and healing, trauma informed care principles, self-harm/suicidality, women’s health, LGBTQ2IA+ support and advocacy, coping through life stage changes, grief and loss, healthy boundaries and creating change through evidence based approaches to difficult societal issues affecting mental health.
She is dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming, collaborating and non-judgmental environment where clients can communicate their needs. She takes a holistic approach, where the client is viewed as the center of treatment and is directive in guiding their pathway to mental health wellness. She has a passion for social justice and pursues opportunities to advocate for underserved, vulnerable populations. She is sensitive and positive to individuals with LGBTQ2IA+ gender identity problems. She is trained in cultural competency awareness and is a certified diversity facilitrainer. She takes a creative approach using evidence based practices to deliver inclusionary mental health practices to all populations.
Nakomis practices using evidence based modalities to include in part, Trauma informed care, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, EMDR Therapy Mindfulness, Strengths based, Client Centered approach.
In her spare time, she enjoys time with her family, marathoning, hiking, cycling, gardening, skiing, the arts and culture and spending as much time outdoors as possible.
